Nokia now has over 4,000 essential 5G patent families

Nokia is among the world leaders in essential 5G patents and has secured its place with the announcement that it’s passed the 4,000 families milestone.

The Finnish vendor has invested over €130 billion (£111 billion) since 2000 on R&D to build its patent portfolio.

Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei wants to attract global experts to the company’s Shanghai campus to get an early lead in 6G.

China proclaims 6G lead through its extensive patent portfolio

The China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) used state media this week to proclaim the country’s lead in the development of 6G.

CNIPA made the declaration on World Intellectual Property Day (April 26th) and pointed to its analysis of 6G-related patents which found – of 38,000 patents – around 35 percent (13,449) came from China.

The US took second place with 18 percent of patents relating to 6G.

Huawei is the global leader in 5G patents and is now deciding how much to charge Apple and Samsung for access to its lucrative assets.

Huawei (15.39%) leads in 5G patents, followed by Qualcomm (11.24%), ZTE (9.81%), Samsung (9.67%), and Nokia (9.01%).

Samsung will be able to access Nokia’s video standards innovations after the pair reached a licensing agreement.

Nokia has invested more than $154 billion in R&D over the past two decades and built a portfolio of over 20,000 patent families (of which, around 3,500 patent families are considered essential to 5G.)
