The UK Telecoms Innovation Network (UKTIN) has launched a plan to boost research, development and innovation within the UK telecoms industry.

The aim of the inclusive industry forum is to help organisations accelerate R&D investment, collaboration and commercialisation of emerging technologies.

Ericsson is hiring 250 people ‘to support 5G growth’

Ericsson has announced plans to hire 250 people at its R&D centre to work on projects that will “support 5G growth”.

The roles will be based at the Swedish vendor’s R&D centre in Athlone, Ireland. Ericsson’s software development campus is one of the country’s largest.

Samsung can now access Nokia’s video standards innovations

Samsung will be able to access Nokia’s video standards innovations after the pair reached a licensing agreement.

Nokia has invested more than $154 billion in R&D over the past two decades and built a portfolio of over 20,000 patent families (of which, around 3,500 patent families are considered essential to 5G.)

Huawei’s R&D lab near its new campus in Dongguan, China is on fire

A research and development facility owned by Huawei has caught fire near the company’s new campus in Dongguan, China.

Social media posts report an explosion at the facility but this is unconfirmed. The R&D lab is, however, expected to contain “sound-absorbing materials” like cotton which is highly flammable.
