NEC, Fujitsu, DOCOMO, and NTT begin 6G trials

Four leading vendors (NEC, Fujitsu, DOCOMO, and NTT) are collaborating on experimental 6G trials.

5G and 4G networks still have plenty of time before they’re shuttered, but it’s never too soon to prepare for what comes next.

The joint 6G trials announced today will aim to accelerate progress towards realising practical applications for the next-generation network.

Naoki Tani, Executive Vice President and CTO at DOCOMO, said:

UK Government announces Open RAN rollout target and 2G/3G sunsetting

A sunset.

The UK Government and mobile network operators have jointly set a target for 35% of the UK’s mobile network traffic to be carried over open and interoperable Radio Access Network (RAN) architectures by 2030.

IT is believed that open network architectures will play a key role in enhancing the security and resilience of the networks required to keep in touch and do business.

Following recent decisions the Government has made around the use of high-risk vendors and...

Apple is already recruiting talent for 6G modems

Apple has begun recruiting talent for 6G modems even before shipping its own 5G versions.

Cupertino has sought to decrease its reliance on third-party suppliers for chips in recent years. Apple looks to extend the success of building its impressive in-house M1 SoCs to next-generation modems.

Two roles for a ‘6G Cellular Platform Architect’ were posted by Apple within days of each other here and here.

With 6G not yet even standardised and 5G networks still...

ETSI launches ISG for 6G-bound Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces technology

Global standards body ETSI has launched an industry specification group (ISG) for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS), a technology that’s expected to play a key 6G role.

RIS is a new type of system node that aims to leverage smart radio surfaces with thousands of small antennas or metamaterial elements to dynamically shape and control radio signals in a goal-oriented manner.

In practical terms, RIS will enable new use cases such as improving elderly care by...

China proclaims 6G lead through its extensive patent portfolio

The China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) used state media this week to proclaim the country’s lead in the development of 6G.

CNIPA made the declaration on World Intellectual Property Day (April 26th) and pointed to its analysis of 6G-related patents which found – of 38,000 patents – around 35 percent (13,449) came from China.

The US took second place with 18 percent of patents relating to 6G.

In the report, CNIPA advises China to...

Apple is already preparing for 6G despite expected 2030(ish) launch

Cupertino has already begun looking for talent to help it get ahead of the competition when 6G begins rolling out.

Apple is rarely first to support new technologies, it’s happy to sit back and wait for them to mature a little. Some would argue Apple was late to 5G while others would say the company was about on time given the relatively limited coverage in most places.

However, companies like Apple don’t get to where they are today without looking...
