Nokia and Dell Technologies have announced the extension of the companies’ strategic partnership in order to ‘advance open network architectures in the telecom ecosystem and private 5G use cases among businesses’.

This amounts in effect to utilising each company’s area of expertise; infrastructure solutions from Dell and private wireless connectivity solutions from Nokia.

Nokia will use Dell as its preferred infrastructure partner for existing customers of Nokia AirFrame, the Finnish provider’s data centre designed for running virtualised and cloud-native software workloads. Dell will in turn offer the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (NDAC) as its preferred private wireless platform for enterprise customers, looking to integrate it with Dell’s own NativeEdge edge operations software platform.

The companies will also continue to work together on platform and application testing, as well as lifecycle management.

Nishant Batra, chief strategy and technology officer at Nokia, said the strategic partnership would improve both companies’ flexibility, as well as better address future customer needs. “In line with our technology strategy, our continued collaboration with Dell will help address the future needs of our customers brought on by the increasing demands on networks and provide solutions to help communications service providers scale modern networks to the cloud,” said Batra in a statement.

Nokia and Dell announced a significant aspect of their partnership at 2023’s MWC event. Nokia’s anyRAN initiative which, as the name suggests, aims to help enterprises and mobile operators choose radio access network (RAN) solutions regardless of business model, is housed on Dell’s XR8000 servers.

“With our decades of digital transformation experience, we’re ready to work together with Nokia’s customers to continue their network cloud transformation journey on the industry’s top selling compute platform,” said Dennis Hoffman, Dell Technologies telecom systems business senior vice president and general manager.
