Samsung and Princeton University join forces on 6G research

Samsung Research America (SRA) has joined Princeton University’s new NextG Corporate Affiliates program, bringing industry and academia together to advance research on 6G wireless networks and related technologies. 

Launched last year within Princeton’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, the NextG initiative aims to spur innovation across networking, sensing, and other key areas that will underpin next-generation data infrastructure.  

As a founding affiliate member, SRA will collaborate closely with Princeton faculty and provide critical insights into real-world needs and applications that can guide academic projects. Other corporate partners include major telecom players such as Ericsson, Nokia, and Qualcomm.

“The best academic research to help realise the promise of future wireless networks is informed by close interactions between faculty and industry technology leaders,” said Andrea Goldsmith, Dean of Princeton’s School of Engineering and Applied Science.

“Our NextG program aims to foster those deep collaborations around wireless technology, as well as policy, that are required to drive meaningful innovation and global leadership in an era of rapid change.”

For Samsung, the tie-up supports ongoing efforts to cement its leadership in 6G, the successor to today’s 5G standard. In 2020, the company’s Advanced Communications Research Center published an influential 6G whitepaper (PDF), followed by a 2022 paper (PDF) focusing on future spectrum needs.  

“We encourage Princeton’s researchers to continue innovating and develop potentially disruptive 6G technologies,” said Dr Charlie Zhang, SVP at SRA.  

The collaboration comes on the heels of Samsung’s inaugural 6G Forum conference last May. With SRA also chairing key 6G standardisation groups, the company is now positioned to translate Princeton’s insights quickly into wider ecosystem development.

Together with its new academic partner, Samsung aims to take wireless into a new era where 6G promises vastly higher speeds, lower latency, and expanded capabilities to enable new mobile applications.
