Nokia has announced the launch of new products aimed at enhancing its AirScale baseband portfolio.

These products, which include next-generation baseband capacity cards named Levante and Lodos – as well as an ultra-performance baseband control card called Ponente – leverage Nokia’s ReefShark System-on-Chip (SoC) technology to deliver industry-leading performance, connectivity, and processing.

Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, said:

“We are excited to introduce our enhanced portfolio of next-generation Radio Access Network solutions. Our new baseband delivers twice the performance with just half the energy, helping our customers meet their ESG targets.

Enabling ultra-high capacity, our future-ready AirScale baseband portfolio helps manage exponential increases in traffic growth. With our MantaRay solutions portfolio, our customers can leverage the power of artificial intelligence in their mobile networks.

All of these solutions are O-RAN ready, and Cloud RAN compatible, supporting the long-term network evolution to 5G-Advanced and beyond.”

Levante, a 4G/5G capacity card, offers exceptional performance by doubling the number of supported Massive MIMO cells while reducing energy consumption by up to 60 percent. The card also provides exponential scalability, enabling larger site configurations up to three times the previous capacity.

Lodos, another addition to Nokia’s baseband portfolio, is a high-performance 4G/5G capacity card that offers enhanced scalability and reduces energy consumption by up to 30 percent.

Nokia’s Ponente is an ultra-performance baseband control card designed to support 2G-5G connectivity with extreme energy efficiency. The card boasts up to 100 percent higher throughput capacity, allowing for increased traffic growth and high-speed site connectivity.

Ponente also reduces energy consumption by up to 80 percent and ensures future-proof site evolution to 5G Standalone and 5G-Advanced. Additionally, it integrates Trusted Platform Module (TPM) technology for enhanced security.

In addition to the baseband cards, Nokia has expanded its radio portfolio with Pandion, the latest generation of FDD remote radio heads, and Shikra, a range of small cells designed for outdoor and indoor scenarios. These additions enhance Nokia’s offerings for O-RAN, Cloud RAN, and purpose-built scenarios.

Nokia has also launched MantaRay, a comprehensive network management and optimisation solutions portfolio that leverages Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML).

The MantaRay portfolio includes MantaRay Network Management, MantaRay SON (Self-Organizing Networks), and MantaRay RIC (RAN Intelligent Controller), providing intelligent, efficient, and cognitive RAN operations. The portfolio also includes MantaRay Energy, which optimises the energy consumption of radio access networks using AI and ML.

These new additions to Nokia’s AirScale baseband portfolio are set to help mobile operators manage traffic growth effectively and future-proof their networks.

Rémy Pascal, Principal Analyst of Mobile Infrastructure at Omdia, commented:

“These new additions to Nokia’s modular AirScale baseband portfolio will help mobile operators manage traffic growth and future-proof their networks by adding capacity and performance where and when it is needed.

Nokia has also significantly raised energy efficiency of the products thanks to new ReefShark baseband SoC and other hardware design improvements helping mobile operators to meet their sustainability commitments.”

Overall, Nokia’s latest product launches reinforce its commitment to innovation and delivering solutions that empower mobile operators to address the increasing demands of the evolving telecommunications landscape.
