The addition of three new locations means that 13 metropolitan areas now support mobile edge computing (MEC) applications on Verizon’s network.

As of this week, developers and businesses can now build and deploy edge applications in: Chicago, Houston, and Phoenix. These locations join the ten existing areas of Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, Miami, New York City, Phoenix, the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, and Washington DC.

Sampath Sowmyanarayan, Chief Revenue Officer of Verizon Business, said:

“Companies in every industry are finding exciting ways to bring 5G and 5G Edge to life – leveraging the full capabilities of 5G from throughput and low latency to strong reliability.

By unlocking the full power of 5G with edge cloud computing, developers can rapidly innovate and build apps and services that take advantage of 5G to improve performance, and create new revenue streams.”

Verizon partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to support Wavelength at the edge of its wireless network. Wavelength brings AWS compute and storage services to the edge and minimises the latency and network hops required to connect from an application hosted in Amazon’s cloud to the end user’s device.

George Elissaios, GM of AWS Wavelength and Director of Product Management at AWS, commented:

“AWS Wavelength brings AWS services to the edge of 5G networks in any region so that customers like Morehouse and Aetho can build ultra-low-latency applications and transform consumers’ experiences.

AWS is excited to continue our collaboration with Verizon so that even more developers across the US can bring powerful cloud-based applications to the edge with extreme low latency and high performance.”

Aetho, the creator of AR/XR telepresence platform Beame, is testing Verizon’s MEC solution to enhance its exciting platform which has assisted in maintaining collaborative work remotely during the pandemic.

“With 5G and MEC, we saw material performance improvements in retaining nearly instantaneous co-presence, which really helps bring the XR experience to life,” said Harrison Lee, Chief Executive Officer of Aetho.

Through a partnership with Morehouse College, Aetho is creating an interactive 3D version of the campus so prospective students can tour it without having to travel to the school. Even post-pandemic, this will reduce the need for long journeys for prospective students.

As early pioneers like Aetho are proving, MEC is helping to deliver on the high expectations set for 5G and enabling some of those promised killer applications with minuscule latency.
